What is an MPE Motorised Valve? Zone Valves Explained
Motorised valves quietly do a big job in your central heating — directing hot water to your radiators and hot water cylinder. Here's what Myson MPE motorised valves are, how to identify yours, and how to tell when one has failed.
What does MPE mean?
MPE is Myson's product range name for its Powerextra motorised zone valves. The MPE family covers 2-port and mid-position (3-port) motorised valves in common pipe sizes such as 22mm and 28mm. When people search for an "MPE valve" they're almost always looking for a genuine Myson Powerextra zone valve or a replacement actuator to fit one.
What is a motorised (zone) valve?
A motorised valve is an electrically operated valve that opens and closes automatically to control the flow of hot water around your heating system. It lets your controls switch heating and hot water zones on and off independently. The MPE valve is the component your programmer and thermostats rely on to send heat to the right place.
How do I identify my existing Myson MPE valve?
Look at the actuator (the plastic powerhead sitting on top of the brass valve body). Genuine Myson valves are usually branded "Myson" or "Myson Powerextra" with a model code such as MPE222 (22mm 2-port) or MPE228 (28mm 2-port) printed on a label on the actuator or moulded into the casing. Note the pipe size stamped on the brass body and whether it has two pipe connections (2-port) or three (3-port/mid-position). If you can't read the markings, take a clear photo and we'll identify it for you.
2-port vs 3-port MPE valves
A 2-port MPE valve controls a single zone — for example heating or hot water — and is used in S-plan systems, which typically have two or more separate valves. A mid-position (3-port) MPE valve can direct water to heating, hot water, or both at once, and is used in Y-plan systems. Getting this right is the single most important part of ordering the correct replacement.
Signs your MPE valve has failed
Common symptoms include: heating or hot water that won't turn off (or won't come on), a valve that hums or buzzes, a lukewarm system, or a valve head that feels stuck. Because the actuator (motor) and the valve body are the hardest-working parts, they're a frequent cause of heating faults.
Can I replace only the MPE actuator?
Very often, yes. On Myson MPE valves the actuator (powerhead) clips off the brass body, so if the fault is electrical — buzzing, or not switching — you can usually fit a replacement actuator without draining the system. You only need to change the whole valve if the brass body is leaking or seized. This makes an MPE repair much quicker and cheaper than people expect.
Which MPE replacement do I need?
To order the right part, confirm three things: (1) is it 2-port or 3-port, (2) the pipe size (e.g. 22mm or 28mm), and (3) whether you need the complete valve or just the actuator.
