What is a motorised (zone) valve?
A motorised valve is an electrically operated valve that opens and closes automatically to control the flow of hot water around your heating system. It lets your controls switch heating and hot water zones on and off independently.
2-port vs mid-position valves
A 2-port valve controls a single zone (for example, heating or hot water) and is used in S-plan systems. A mid-position (3-port) valve can direct water to heating, hot water, or both at once, and is used in Y-plan systems. Myson MPE actuator valves provide reliable control in both setups.
Signs your motorised valve has failed
Common symptoms include: heating or hot water that won't turn off (or won't come on), a valve that hums or buzzes, a lukewarm system, or a valve head that feels stuck. Because the actuator (motor) and the valve body are the hardest-working parts, they're a frequent cause of heating faults.
Replacing an MPE valve
In many cases just the powerhead/actuator can be replaced rather than the whole valve, saving time and draining. Always isolate the electrical supply first and, if you're unsure about wiring, use a qualified heating engineer.
