Motorised Valve Replacement Guide (Zone & Mid-Position Valves)
A failed motorised (zone) valve is a frequent cause of heating and hot water faults. Often you can replace just the actuator head without draining the system — here's how motorised valve replacement works.
Whole valve or just the head?
A motorised valve has two parts: the actuator (the electrical powerhead that does the switching) and the brass valve body in the pipework. The actuator is the part that usually fails. On many valves — including Myson MPE actuators — you can replace just the powerhead without draining the system, which is far quicker and cheaper than swapping the whole valve.
Diagnosing a failed valve
Typical symptoms: heating or hot water that won't turn off or won't come on, a valve that hums or buzzes, a system that's only lukewarm, or a manual lever that won't stay in position. If the body itself is leaking or seized, the whole valve needs replacing; if it's an electrical or switching fault, the actuator is the likely cause.
Safety first
Motorised valves are wired to the mains. Always isolate the electrical supply at the fused spur or consumer unit before touching the wiring. Because zone valve wiring ties into your system's control wiring, this is a job best suited to a competent DIYer with electrical knowledge — or a qualified heating engineer.
Replacing just the actuator
Isolate the power, note or photograph the wiring, release the actuator from the valve body (usually a clip or a couple of screws), disconnect the wires, then fit the new actuator and rewire to match. Restore power and test that the valve opens and closes on demand from heating and hot water.
Replacing the whole valve
If the brass body has failed, the system must be drained down to the level of the valve. Cut or unscrew the old body out, fit the new valve the correct way round (note the flow-direction arrow), solder or compression-connect it, then refill, vent and check for leaks before wiring the actuator.
