Finding a Replacement for an Old or Discontinued Heating Control
Heating controls outlast the models they're sold as, so when an old thermostat, timeswitch or programmer fails, the exact part is often discontinued. The good news: there's almost always a modern equivalent. Here's how to find it.
Find the make and model
Look for a brand and model number on the front, underneath, or on the backplate once removed. Even a partial code (for example 'LP722', 'ST9100' or 'MPRT') is usually enough for us to trace the equivalent.
Work out what it controls
Is it a single-channel timer (heating OR hot water), a twin-channel programmer (heating AND hot water), or a room thermostat that senses temperature? Matching the number of channels and the function is the key to a like-for-like swap.
Wired or wireless?
Check whether the control is hard-wired or battery/RF. If running new cable is awkward, a wireless (RF) replacement with a receiver near the boiler is often the easiest upgrade — no redecorating.
Note the backplate wiring
Before removing anything, isolate the power and photograph the wiring and terminal numbers. A modern replacement can usually reuse the same wiring, which makes fitting straightforward.
